THE HISTORY OF THE AREA

The Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna plateau still bears intact signs of the many histories that have passed through it over the centuries. Signs that can be seen and testify to both ancient and more recent history. Starting from Prehisotry with its Palaeolithic and Mesolithic encampments located at the  Cogola di Carbonare and the ancient lake of Ecken; passing through the period of German-Cymbrian colonisation, of which the German speaking community of Luserna represents an incredible living testimony, and through the period of the Belle Epoque, which, with the arrival of the Viennese bourgeoisie, ushered in the flourishing economy of tourism. Also of the great interest are the vestiges of the Great War, which was bitterly fought on these lands and of which the seven Emperor’s Fortresses still preserve the tragic memory.

Forte Belvedere

Forte Belvedere, in Lavarone, is a Habsburg fortress whose motto, still remembered today, boldly read “Per Trento basto io!” and stands at an altitude of 1177 metres towards Valdastico. It is now home to an important museum rich in history and open all year round.

Castel Beseno

Beseno castle is the largest fortified structure in Trentino Alto Adige. It stands in the municipality of Besenello, in the province of Trento, a few minutes drive from Grand Hotel Biancaneve. It is currently one of the sites of the museum complex of the Buonconsiglio Castle Provincial Museum.

Base Tuono

The Base Tuono was an Italian Air Force and NATO missile base active between 1966 and 1978 and is located in the municipality of Folgaria near Passo Coe, a few hundred metres from the border with the Veneto region, specifically with the province of Vicenza.

Maso Spilzi

The 18th-century farmstead, a historic property of the Spilzi family, is an original example of an alpine settlement. What was once the barn is now an exhibition area for art exhibitions held annually and there are also multimedia tours.
